We've joined forces with the City of Nanaimo and local social service agencies, hosting free meals to improve social connection in a handful of Nanaimo neighbourhoods.
This spring we held block-party style meals in Harewood, and we’ll do more of the same in South Nanaimo this summer.
"Thank you so much for the pancake breakfast and for the initiative to build connections in our community,” said one Harewood participant. “I found it to be most informative, helpful, and worthwhile."
The free “Meet Your Neighbour” events are funded by a provincial Plan H grant and supported by United Way, Nanaimo Women’s Centre, City of Nanaimo, and Seniors Connect. The goal: to strengthen social bonds in areas at high risk of social isolation, focusing on vulnerable populations such as seniors living independently and single-parent families.
Each Meet Your Neighbour event serves free, delicious, local food and gives residents a chance to meet in an informal setting. This is the first step in fostering relationships. Neighbours are also given the opportunity to improve their street by taking on a small project of their choice, funded by Plan H.
